SUMMER FARMERS

Each year we hire several people. either for the full season (May 1 to Oct. 31) or just for the summer months (June/July/August).   Although we hire employees on a year-by-year basis and we do not ask for a multiple year commitment, we particularly seek full season employees with an interest in returning for work in future years, and we reward this commitment.  A stable farm crew is essential to our farm's success.

Before you read this description or apply for work, be sure you have read our introduction for perspective employees. It describes what it's like to work here and explains what we're looking for in a farmer.

Basic Duties

All employees share in the primary farm tasks listed below.  It's essential that you understand that you will spend the majority of your time together with other employees performing these repetitive manual tasks:

  • Harvesting, washing, and packing produce

  • Weeding / hoeing / caring for growing crops

  • Sowing seeds and transplanting vegetables

  • Caring for livestock and attending to their needs

Prior experience in these areas is helpful but not required. Training is provided as we go.

Advanced Duties

Most of our full season workers specialize in some areas, such as washing and packing produce, raising seedlings, coming to the market, caring for livestock, or operating machinery.  We will discuss your interests and qualifications for these roles during the interview process.  Prior experience in these areas is helpful but not required. We happily train the right applicant, and reward team members who excel in their roles through higher wages.

Dates and Times of Work

  • Some team members can start as early as April 1 and stay on until late November. Exact start and end dates are negotiable.

  • Full-time employees generally work 35-40 hours per week. Monday to Friday. Occasional weekend work is available. If you’re interested in working extra hours, or 10 hour days to have a 3 day weekend - we can accommodate.

  • We start early, 8am through summers shoulders, and 7am in the hottest part of the summer (finishing at 3 on a hot day is a beautiful thing).

  • Occasional days off are okay with prior approval.

  • We work on some holidays dependent on our harvesting needs (May 24th, Canada Day, Civic Holiday, and Labor Day). The food doesn’t stop growing :)

Compensation

  • Starting wage is $17.00 per hour. Those with prior farming experience will start at a higher salary.

  • We often provide bonuses and raises for good performance if people remain on.

  • Hands-on experience of learning to grow food and the skills you develop in doing so carry rewards through the rest of your life.
